1992 Swim Team Bus Accident Movie To Be

South Bend Tribune Article

This is the first non-pay article I've seen with details about the movie.

Basic backstory: the swim team had a meet at Northwestern University in January 1992 and was on their way back on the Toll Road. In a heavy storm, the bus slid off the highway at mile marker 75, two miles west of the Notre Dame exit. Two students died in the accident. Freshman Haley Scott sustained injuries during the crash and after recovering, returned to the pool.

Scott had been approached several times about possible scripts to make a movie but did not like the portrayal of the story. Finally in 2008, Scott wrote her own story and published a book, What Though The Odds: Haley Scott's Journey of Faith and Triumph. With her telling the story the way she wants it told, a movie is in the works due out in 2012.

Now, filming has been green lighted by Notre Dame to permit part of the filming to take place on campus. This would be the third film to be filmed on campus. The first being Knute Rockne All American (1940) starring Pat O'Brien as Knute Rockne and Ronald Reagon as George Gipp. The second, maybe more well known, is Rudy (1993) starring Sean Astin as Daniel Ruettiger.
