The skinny:
- All 5 starters scored in double figures with TJ going wild. TJ 25pts, 9-12 overall, 4-6 from 3, 3-5 FT. Abro 18pts 12-12 FT, Gody and Nash 13, Hansbrough 10.
- Four (4) yes 4 bench players got into the game, Joey Brookes, Carleton Scott, Peoples and Tom Knight. Maybe Brey senses the season is growing dim and getting some minutes to next year's guys.
- Gody sat out down the stretch with a hyperextended knee. Limiting his numbers all game to 13 and 6.
- Team 14 assists to 14 turnovers (Seton Hall was 23 to 8)
- Nash fouled out near the end.
The Reality:
- Kudos to TJ for stepping up and laying down the points while playing all 40 minutes.
- While 9-9 is still feasible (vs St Johns, @ Louisville, vs UConn, @ Georgetown, vs Pitt, @ Marquette) on paper it's not likely to happen. It will probably turn out that we'll end with 1 road win in Big East play. We've also come a long way from our record winning streak at home.
- Brey thought 9-9 would get us to the tournament. I don't think he was counting Rutgers and Seton Hall as part of the latter 9. Unless by some stroke we win the BigEast Tournament, look for ND to be playing in the NIT against UNC this year. Maybe if they expand the bracket to 96 teams (which they are talking about doing next year), then maybe we'll make it. But either way, we won't go very deep.
- There have been mummers on a certain overzealous ND sports related website about Brey's tenure. Now in his 10th season, he is basically par for the course, though this season has been a little more disappointing than others. Is his job in jeopardy? Most likely not. Why? He's doing well enough in the "tough" Big East to continue getting by. It may come down to football is the big cash cow so the university will ensure that that team stays prominent. In addition, general apathy doesn't help. In the fall, ask any student who the opponent is on the next Saturday. They'll know. In the winter, ask any student who the basketball team is playing on Thursday, the majority will shrug and not know. When the team is doing well, students will go out and support the team. Overall, ND is not a basketball school. People are too "busy" to trek over to the JACC for a two hour game. Football takes all Saturday and is a social event. All in all, we'll be seeing Brey next year and for the next couple years.
Gody Watch -- 13pts / 6reb
